Storytelling based on Illustrations

This week, Mr. Hine’s classes demonstrated excellent behavior and creativity during library lessons at Yorktown Middle School. Students explored storytelling using a series of illustrations from this year’s Caldecott nominees. Each group developed an original story complete with a title, plot, mood, dialogue, and optional illustrations of their own. The activity builds on early literacy strategies such as “book walks,” where students predict stories based on pictures before reading. By focusing on visual cues and narrative structure, students strengthened their understanding of how stories are constructed—while enjoying the creative process.
